Kyra Rice, Warm Springs, Death Valley

Situated within the remains of an abandoned chalk mining community I "drew" an arrow in the space between the gate blocking the entrance of a chalk mine and the scaffolding to its side that supported an overhang of earth above. This was a gesture pointing at a past and present oasis. It was a call to those who might not recognize it's immediate value to the visitor or it's value to the passed inhabitants of this very hot, exposed environment in Death Valley. Only the day before the air conditioning went out on one of the Suburbans in our caravan. People in the group were faced with the reality that with out the relief of the vehicles and AC, we would be under extreme exposure. The arrow pointed presently at the cool air that was blowing out from inside the mine and to the past at the resource that drew the original inhabitants to this site.

I also drew lines in chalk on the ground, a reoccurring reference to fault lines, but also to lead the passing overheated visitor toward the mine.
